Star Wars: The Marvel Covers Vol. 1 Hardcover – October 20, 2015
Author: Marvel Comics ID: 0785198385

Series: Star Wars: the Marvel CoversHardcover: 224 pagesPublisher: Marvel (October 20, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0785198385ISBN-13: 978-0785198383 Product Dimensions: 7.8 x 0.8 x 11.2 inches Shipping Weight: 1.6 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #223,105 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #678 in Books > Comics & Graphic Novels > Graphic Novels > Media Tie-In #729 in Books > Comics & Graphic Novels > Graphic Novels > science Fiction #937 in Books > Comics & Graphic Novels > Publishers > Marvel

Great collection of EVERY variant cover for the latest run of MARVEL STAR WARS books (STAR WARS 1-6, PRINCESS LEIA 1-5, and DARTH VADER 1-6)… love seeing the art as full page entries (and many as black and white variants as well)

Most of why I purchased this book was for the Alex Ross covers. Unfortunately about half of the covers he painted appear as 1 inch by 2 inch images in the bottom of a page. Yet a good portion of the other art has sketch or uncolored versions. There are several other places where they put in smaller pictures of some of the best art work. The book would have only needed to be 10 or 15 pages longer to see all of the art full sized. Why didn’t they do so? At almost $40 retail you would think that they would have at least considered doing so. I can only guess that they are planning on doing some sort of double dip later on where all of the ‘best’ art will show up at full size. I’m returning this one and I’ll wait for that inevitable double dip down the road.

Before I start, a couple of pieces of information that may help. First off, I find the science in this book to be a bit overwhelming at times, and I’ve been teaching at the university level for more than twenty years–just not in the sciences. I have a doctorate and three master’s degrees, and I still find my brain swimming when I try to make it through some of the scientific info. That’s just the way it is–the science isn’t for everyone, and you shouldn’t give up on this book if the science sections don’t make complete sense–just don’t read them. The information isn’t at all necessary for improving your running. It’s cool to know if you do make it through, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t.

Second, I used the DRF ten years ago (at age 44) to go from an 18:55 5k to an 18:05 in about six months. I just got back into competitive running last year (after several years of doing ultras), and I had no real speed at all. After three or four month, I found I wasn’t improving my times much, so I decided to give Daniels another go-round and bought the new edition. On November 1, 2014, I did a 6k in 24:52 (a 6:40 pace). Then I bought this book and started the 5k program, and in March of 2015 I did a 10k in 39:36 (a 6:23 pace). That pace, of course, would have been faster had I done just a 6k, so there is evidence in my experience that shows that this program works if you give it a chance.

Here’s what I’ve done, and what I recommend to others to whom I’ve given this book. First off, you need a current running time for a specific distance. If you don’t have one, go get one, either by signing up for a local 5k or going to a high school track and pushing yourself for a mile.
Being a recreational runner and mini-triathlon participant, I tried to read as many informative books on training as possible to improve my personal best times. I’ve read about Jack Daniels, PhD, and his successful distance running training programs in numerous online magazines before, so I didn’t hesitate to select this book instantly.

Likes:
*Specific training programs geared toward runners from novices to elite runners.
*Training based on scientific aerobic data, such as Velocity and VDOT O2 Max (maximum oxygen consumption and the efficiency of utilizing specific amounts of oxygen to generate velocity or speed/faster times), Maximum heart rate, Resting heart rate, etc..
*Simple wording and explanations allow most readers to readily understand the aerobic data and parameters being measured, calculated, and evaluated.
*Addressed the psychological and motivational aspects of distance running training.
*Informative tables of VDOT values for different levels and ages of runners, i.e., what VDOT ranges are expected to generate the times (at various distances) associated with age and level of proficiency.
*Very informative sections on breathing rhythm, altitude training, and preparing for events/races with precise time tables.

Slight drawback:
Very limited discussions on sports nutrition, supplements, carbo-loading, and energy drinks, etc.. Author just stated to have a consistent diet to store up necessary muscle glycogen for specific distances. Readers will have to rely on their own nutrition experiences or do further research on that important topic.

Overall:
An invaluable, informative, and proven distance running training guide based on scientific data and evaluations.

Top 10 Copenhagen Kindle Edition

Top 10 Copenhagen (EYEWITNESS TOP 10 TRAVEL GUIDES) Kindle Edition
Author: Antonia Cunningham ID: B00X0R1OGE

Done.
File Size: 93617 KBPrint Length: 128 pagesPublisher: DK Eyewitness Travel; Fol Lam Pa edition (April 7, 2015)Publication Date: April 7, 2015 Sold by: Penguin Group (USA) LLC Language: EnglishID: B00X0R1OGEText-to-Speech: Enabled X-Ray: Not Enabled Word Wise: Not EnabledLending: Not Enabled Enhanced Typesetting: Not Enabled Best Sellers Rank: #348,049 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store) #14 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Nonfiction > Travel > Europe > Denmark #21 in Books > Travel > Europe > Denmark > Copenhagen #39 in Books > Travel > Europe > Denmark > General

I am generally a fan of DK guidebooks, including some of the small-format "Top 10" guides, but I cannot recommend this guidebook without qualification. The book is appealing for its compact size and focus on the most significant sites in several categories. Like other DK books, the photographs are superior and provide the most compelling reason to buy the book. In general the book discusses the major sites the typical tourist will want to see (Tivoli, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Kongens Nytorv, Nyhavn, etc.) like many other books do, but due to its diminutive size detail is limited on any attraction. Normally that is fine for a book for use on the ground (rather than a larger book used for planning), but here the material is not especially well organized, and some of the ratings of restaurants and hotels are questionable: I do not consider "The Square" (Radhuspladsen) hotel to be a "Luxury Hotel", for instance.

While there will always be subjective disagreements about ratings, the impression I got while attempting to use this book over a week in Copenhagen recently was that the information was not well presented, and the "pull out map and guide" was actually worse than useless. The map I got at the train station was infinitely more useful than the horrible (and tiny) T-shaped pull out map in this guide: if you want to get really lost just try using it to navigate from the Radhuspladsen to Nyhavn, which is one of the most heavily traveled routes for tourists. Seriously, do yourself a favor if you buy this book and throw the map away.

The book is slickly packaged and might make a nice souvenir, but as a useful travel guide there are many better alternatives on the market.

As with the earlier review, the scattershot nature of the "top 10" format makes it inconvenient to find out about some places.

Much worse than that, however, is that the hours given for some museums are not right! We missed seeing a museum because the book told us it was open on Mondays, when in fact it was closed.

Also, the book mentions some attractions as being "near" other popular sites, but without enough information to find them (not even a north/south/east/west hint). "Near" sometimes turns out to mean 1 km away.

This book is probably better as a supplement to another guidebook, particularly because of the good maps of central Copenhagen, but it is not good enough on its own.

The "Top 10" format has its problems and they are much in evidence in this little guide to Copenhagen. Information about the same site is found scattershot through out the book instead of in one convenient spot. I found it pretty irritating. The maps, however, are very good, and best of all, a nice little compact separate map is to be found tucked into the flap of the back cover. The photos, as usual in this series, are helpful and vivid. On the whole, though, with the exception of the map, this is a better souvenir than it is a guidebook.

The Yoga Bible – May 29, 2003

The Yoga Bible Paperback – May 29, 2003
Author: Visit ‘s Christina Brown Page ID: 1582972427

About the Author

Christina Brown lives and breathes the philosophy of a natural life. A long-time yoga and complementary medicine practitioner, she has studied and taught yoga internationally. She runs Yoga Source in Sydney, Australia, where she also conducts workshops on Ayurveda and Anti-Aging Facial Yoga.

–This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Paperback: 400 pagesPublisher: Walking Stick Press (May 29, 2003)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1582972427ISBN-13: 978-1582972428 Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 1.1 x 6.6 inches Shipping Weight: 1.4 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #2,333 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #1 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Exercise & Fitness > Walking #4 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Exercise & Fitness > Yoga #16 in Books > Sports & Outdoors > Hiking & Camping
The Yoga Bible: The Definitive Guide to Yoga Postures by Christina Brown is a nice little yoga book that fits snuggly into your bag and can be a source of inspiration for all yoga students but some of the poses would challenge the most advance yogi’s.

Physically, this book has a small foot print but has over 400 pages of information and covers 170 Yoga Positions. The construction seems average at best. I doubt if this book would stand up to much wear and tear since the binding looks brittle. It is tough to keep open on the mat with out the pages closing quickly on you. It should be bigger!

The content of the books starts with Part One: Introductions (8 Yoga Limbs, Breathing, and Practice Suggestions), Part Two: The Practice (Postures, Pranayama, Mudras, Bandhas, and Kriyas), Part Three: Yoga with a Special Focus (Ailments, Meditation), Part Four: Finding Your Yoga (9 Branches of Yoga).

Part One: Introductions – Starts with the History of Yoga, Rewards, The Eight Limbs of Yoga, and Practice Guidelines. This section is clear, short, and concise. The guideline for practicing offers some very good suggestions for approaching your time on the mat.

Part Two: The Practice – The color photos are great and the detailed Information Box is extremely helpful with the following headings: Gaze, Build-Up Poses, Counter Poses, Lighten, and Effect. It would have been even better if they would have included Warnings and included page numbers next to the Build-Up and Counter Poses for quick reference. The models are exceptionally yogis with many years of practice so use some caution when trying these poses. It would have been an added benefit to show modifications with props.

New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy PDF Free Download

New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know Paperback – 2002
Author: Visit ‘s E.D. Hirsch Page ID: 0965766438

In this fast-paced information age, how can Americans know what’s really important and what’s just a passing fashion? Now more than ever, we need a source that concisely sums up the knowledge that matters to Americans — the people, places, ideas, and events that shape our cultural conversation. With more than six thousand entries,The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy is that invaluable source.
Wireless technology. Gene therapy. NAFTA. In addition to the thousands of terms described in the original Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, here are more than five hundred new entries to bring Americans’ bank of essential knowledge up to date. The original entries have been fully revised to reflect recent changes in world history and politics, American literature, and, especially, science and technology. Cultural icons that have stood the test of time (Odysseus, Leaves of Grass, Cleopatra, the Taj Mahal, D-Day) appear alongside entries on such varied concerns as cryptography, the digital divide, the European Union, Kwanzaa, pheromones, SPAM, Type A and Type B personalities, Web browsers, and much, much more.
As our world becomes more global and interconnected, it grows smaller through the terms and touchstones that unite us. As E. D. Hirsch writes in the preface, “Community is built up of shared knowledge and values — the same shared knowledge that is taken for granted when we read a book or newspaper, and that is also taken for granted as part of the fabric that connects us to one another.” A delicious concoction of information for anyone who wants to be in the know, The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy brilliantly confirms once again that it is “an excellent piece of work . . . stimulating and enlightening” (New York Times) — the most definitive and comprehensive family sourcebook of its kind.

I overcame the basic survival and class language barrier after living 2-3 years, but the cultural barrier with combined with conversational language is very challenging. Not only for more socializing but also more nature English writing and speacking, I worked hard, and Culturacy Dictionary helps me a lot. It includes expressions from various areas, e.g. bible, literature, idiom, etc. During the reading or watching TV, I can understand better the implications and expressions rooted from relgion, history, literature, and other areas of culture.

I use this dictionary with several ways. First, just read the page I am intersted in. Second, I consult it during my writing to find better expression, and do more research to understand the background better via internet. Third, play game with this book with my American Classmates – in fact, this helps me the most. They explain what is not written in the dictionary, and this is the way I can acquire the knowledge of the expression easily and last long in my brain.

This dictionary is wonderful, I think, for both for navtive and non-native. Non natives can upgrade their English level with cultural understanding, and natives can be more sophisticated using their languages. It is a great tool, and I am happy to find it!

The pictures aren’t flashy. The text isn’t eloquent. But, this book delivers exactly what the subtitle suggests, "What Every American Needs to Know." Full of up-to-date and well-organized content, the book provides answers to everyday questions, in addition to being a source for research. (Writers of college papers will find this a very useful tool.)
Although I am not one to pick up a dictionary and read through it, I typically cover several pages at a time when I reference this book. While reading the text of one piece, I often find myself intrigued about, and looking up, another topic.
Every home should have a copy of this book!
"Tight Lines!"

Want to look up cultural references in Denis Miller’s rants? Can’t remember what the Byzantine empire did? Feel like your loosing your memory? This book can help!
Yes, I’ll admit the title does have a certain haughtiness and presumptiouness to it, but this book is packed with information. The topics covered are quite broad, and I guess it would HAVE to be if the goal is to ensure cultural literacy. Including all the things you should have learned in highschool had you been paying attention, this book is a great refresher course in everything from History, to Literature, to proverbs and idioms in the English language.
It has a bit of a western bias, which is sort of what I’m getting at when I say the title presumes alot. Perhaps an alternate title (and I mean this without cynicsm) would be "what most Americans don’t know about America but should." I include myself in that category, by the way.
The best thing about this book is it’s organization. At first, I was wishing it was all alphabetical, but then you realize that grouping entries in catagorized chapters is better. Additionally, the bites of data are concise and easily digested, enough to answer a question and provide enough information for you to look elsewhere if you want in depth explainations.

Dreamland – September 22, 2015

Dreamland Hardcover – September 22, 2015
Author: Robert L. Anderson ID: 0062338676

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—This imaginative debut is a cross between Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones (S. & S., 2007) and Christopher Nolan’s film Inception. Dea Donahue walks through people’s dreams by using the dreamers’ possessions and feeds off the energy. But she is never to interfere in the dream and never to make her presence known. Having such a unique gift has made it difficult for Dea to grow close to people, and it doesn’t help that her single mother ups and moves them at a moment’s notice. But in rural Indiana, she has made friends with awkward Gollum and enigmatic Connor, who recently moved to town from Chicago. He’s running from a tragic past and rumors circulate that he’s dangerous. When Dea starts entering Connor’s dreams, she risks calling attention to herself from the faceless monsters her mother has always warned her about. Then Dea’s mother goes missing, and a graduate student starts writing an exposé on Connor. But to find her mother and help Connor, Dea must traverse a world of nightmares. This page-turning thriller is filled with creepy dreamscapes that will entrance and frighten readers. Although there are some plot holes involving Connor’s past and Dea’s ignorance regarding her mother’s behavior, these don’t affect the enjoyment of the story, which revs up to a satisfying conclusion. VERDICT Recommended for those who appreciate suspense novels with unique twists.—Kimberly Garnick Giarratano, Rockaway Township Public Library, NJ

I received an ARC of this book from Harper Teen in exchange for a honest review.

Dea walks dreams. She’s always been able to do it and more than a gift or a power, it has become an unwanted part of her life. It prevents her from being normal, along with the constant moving, a weird and secretive mother, a life where mirrors are prohibited and clocks are welcomed – she has always been an outsider, a freak and a loner. For a short time, she thinks that everything’s alright, with the entry of Connor, the new guy, who understands her and might even like her, but it doesn’t take a long time, for him to be exactly what shatters Dea’s carefully constructed life of dreams, lies, confusion and secrets.

Dreamland was a mess of a book. But it was also a beautiful and fascinating mess. I adored reading this book, where everything was all over the place, and the writing was whimsical and eerie. The story was intriguing, at times creepy, thrilling and unpredictable.

I liked Connor. The romance in this book, was subtle, though it did have importance to the plot. However, Connor was a great companion, a good friend and most of all, a stable and sensible guy who was the one thing that made sense in Dea’s life.

Dreamland is not just a story about Dea’s dream walking. Rather it’s a story of two quests. One involves the search for a person, and the other is a murder mystery. Dea’s life gets entangled with both of these quests, while her habit of dream walking drags her into trouble as much as it helps her.

One of the best things about the book is the writing. It was creepy as hell, and I loved it! The constant mention of the ticking of clocks, the birds that lead the way out of dreams and most of all, the faceless men – they gave me nightmares!
Dreamland was an interesting book, if I shall say. I really enjoyed this book. It had some light, cute moments and other moments the intensity of the book hit’s you in the face and you are left with such a emotional feeling and all you want to do is KEEP. READING. Overall, I really enjoyed this book but there were some things that bugged me.

Our main character, Dea, lives with her mom and they move around a lot. Not only that but her mom doesn’t have clocks or mirrors in their living space. Already you can tell there is definitely more to Dea’s mom than a crazy lady with weird motives. One thing that could have been improved with this book was Dea getting more character-personality-put into her. I finished this book and tried to come up with three words to describe her. I look back on those three words and kind of cringe because of how boring and common they were. (Words like happy! And kind!) I wish I could have put better words to describe her. I am expecting this book to have a sequel so I am hoping to learn more about her personality in the next book.

Even if I felt like Dea didn’t have much character, the character development she went through was great. In the beginning of the book, she is so clueless about her past and where she comes from. By the end of the book, she knows all this information about her roots is all revealed and that really changed her for the better.

Here is the part I enjoyed the most: the plot of this book. It all went at a really nice pace and not at all did I feel like it was being rushed. The dream-walking aspect of this book was also something I really enjoy about this book. Dreamland really gave a glimpse of the history and roots of dreamwalking and what it’s about it is the coolest thing.

Cracking the AP Psychology Exam, 2016 Edition – August 4, 2015

Cracking the AP Psychology Exam, 2016 Edition (College Test Preparation) Paperback – August 4, 2015
Author: Princeton Review ID: 0804126232

Series: College Test PreparationPaperback: 368 pagesPublisher: Princeton Review (August 4, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0804126232ISBN-13: 978-0804126236 Product Dimensions: 8.3 x 0.9 x 10.8 inches Shipping Weight: 1.3 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #10,613 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #8 in Books > Medical Books > Psychology > Education & Training #12 in Books > Teens > Education & Reference > Study Aids > College Entrance #24 in Books > Teens > Education & Reference > Study Aids > Advanced Placement

I bought the 2009 Edition of this book and used it to self-study for the AP Psychology Exam. Studying from this book, and nothing else (for only a couple weeks leading up to the test), I was able to confidently take the exam and score a 5. This "Cracking The AP…" series of books are very good overall, but I noticed the Psychology one to be particularly well organized and concise. They give you all the information you need and none that you don’t. I can attest that this book is all you need to get a 5 on the AP test.

As a junior in high school, I took a one semester AP Psychology course in the fall which provided a mediocre understanding of the subject. With the amount I learned in class I would get a 2 or possibly a 3 on the AP Exam. I purchased this book a month before the exam and when I was finished with it, I felt like I was an expert at AP Psychology! All the terms I had learned with no meaning I now understood with depth! When it was time to take the actual exam, I felt as if it were only a Medium difficulty test (in comparison to other AP tests I’ve taken) and was confident I would receive a 4 or 5 on the exam. I ended up getting a 5 on the exam thanks to this book mainly! Nowadays I purchase AP Princeton Review books to just read the material and expand my knowledge on various subjects…way better than teachers could teach them.

Long story short, I highly recommend this book.

Score of Five on the AP exam means this book works! You go through the chapters (even only 60% of the entire book) one at a time and make some highlights and margin notes like I did and the book pretty much covers the test for a five. The practice exams included are extremely helpful as well. Will buy from this brand again for my AP Calculus test coming up!

Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book Trade Edition – February 10, 2002 PDF

Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book Trade Edition Hardcover – February 10, 2002
Author: AAWS ID: 1893007162

About the Author

Anonymous Anonymous is a contributor for Hazelden Publications including Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book 4th Edition.

Hardcover: 576 pagesPublisher: Alcoholics Anonymous World Services; 4th edition (October 2001)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1893007162ISBN-13: 978-1893007161 Product Dimensions: 6 x 1.5 x 8.5 inches Shipping Weight: 1.6 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #1,925 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #4 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Addiction & Recovery > Twelve-Step Programs #5 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Addiction & Recovery > Alcoholism #12 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Addiction & Recovery > Substance Abuse
I read the AA Big Book and joined Overeaters Anonymous thinking I was a compulsive overeater. Perhaps I would have been an alcoholic, but my body chemistry never tolerated alcohol, smoking or drugs, so I was spared that. It turned out the weight problem was also a body chemistry thing, and the time I spent in diligent application to the 12-step program led me to realize I wasn’t a compulsive overeater after all.

Reading the AA Big Book was fantastic for me, and I recommend it to anyone. If you are not an addict, it will certainly not harm you to try a 12-step program. You are likely to come out, as I did after 10 months, with a deep respect for what these programs do. Miracles are everyday events in these groups.

Some of the people who have written reviews here resisted the tenets of AA because they are unwilling to submit to a higher power. That’s human nature. Anything else is itself a miracle.

My concerns about AA prior to reading the book were the opposite. I am a Christian and I was under the impression that the 12 steps are in conflict with that. Such is not at all the case. No one is going to try to hypnotize you!

Nor is a 12-step program going to tell you to avoid medical help. One of AA’s founders was a doctor, and right from the start AA began saving lives that doctors knew they could not save. It still happens in AA, daily.

If you are ready to be inspired, read this book. You will understand yourself and other people better. If you don’t feel ready to be inspired, maybe you need to read it even more.

I noticed one of the reviews complained about archaic language in the book. It’s not that archaic. You don’t need a glossary to read it, as you do with the King James Bible or Shakespeare!

Got this book about an year ago and have since done almost half of the hikes described in this book. Can’t say if these are the 60 best hikes (there are much more than 60 hikes in the covered area), but they’ve definitely all been great hikes so far.

The hikes can all be done as day trips from Seattle: The maximum driving distance from Seattle is 60 miles, except for the Mt Rainier hikes, which are more like 60 miles as the crow flies. Come to think of it, the driving time would be a more relevant criteria than the distance, but of course that wouldn’t make for such a nice title.

The format of the book is quite practical. In particular, I appreciate the trailhead GPS coordinates, the easily accessible and detailed overview map, and the trail elevation profiles. There are more than a dozen criteria for choosing a hike, including trail length, crowdedness and various scenic features. Only, I wish this information was presented in a table rather than in list form, which makes choosing hikes based on multiple criteria a bit tedious.

I wasn’t too enthusiastic about the schematic trail maps that lack topographic information. However all the trails I’ve seen so far were well marked, so this didn’t turn out to be a big issue. On the other hand the book could use more pictures and perhaps less text: In this context, a picture (with a good caption) really can be worth a thousand (or at least a few hundred…) words.

Before you leave on any of the hikes, be sure to check with the WSDOT and the relevant park authorities that the roads to the trail (and the trail itself) are accessible. Look for recent trail reports on the WTA’s site.

Dragonwings CD PDF

Dragonwings CD: Golden Mountain Chronicles:1903 Audio CD – Audiobook, Unabridged
Author: Visit ‘s Laurence Yep Page ID: 0061493368

From School Library Journal

Grades 4-7–Laurence Yep’s Newbery Honor book (HarperCollins, 1975) offers insights into the lives of Chinese-Americans in early 20th century California. The story begins as eight-year-old Moon Shadow Lee journeys across the Pacific to join his proud and clever father at the family-owned laundry in San Francisco. The boy recounts their problems with prejudice, as well as the kindness of uncles and cousins. Father and son must leave the protection of the family to move out of Chinatown, but they find refuge with a generous and friendly landlady. Once they have successfully established a repair business, they turn their attention to making a flying machine. Though it’s a modern invention, part of their motivation is the elder’s belief in his own previous dragon existence. Yep draws heavily on his own heritage, but also includes figures such as Teddy Roosevelt and the Wright Brothers, and historic events such as the San Francisco Earthquake. The result is a heartwarming story set in a familiar time and place, but told from a new perspective. The quiet intensity of B. D. Wong’s narration enriches the text as he creates memorable voices for a large cast of characters. Wafting, ethereal music signals the end of each side of the cassette, and the cover art is attractive. The only problem is the lightweight cardboard package, which is not sturdy enough for heavy circulation. That shouldn’t deter libraries from purchIDg this fine recording which will provide upper elementary and middle school listeners with lessons in history, and a gentle reminder of the value of a loving family and loyal friends.

No one melds fact and myth into seamless storylines of historical fiction quite like Lawrence Yep. Like many of his tales, the remarkable, "Dragonwings", reflects on the Chinese experience in America. Says Yep in his author’s note, "I have tried to make some of these dry historical facts become living experiences". The result is a book that certain kids will grow attached to and respect. Admittedly, it is not a book for all children, but for what it offers it is an impressive work.

The plot follows Moon Shadow, a boy sent from his native China to live with his father in the Land of the Gold Mountains a.k.a San Francisco in 1903. While there, Moon Shadow learns a great deal about the ways the white settlers (referred to in this text, without exception, as demons) reacted to the Chinese in California. Yep does not play down the characters’ difficulties, but Moon Shadow and his father, Windrider, learn the ways in which they may live their lives acceptably. They befriend their white employers, survive the great San Francisco earthquake, and finally Windrider follows his dream of making a flying machine just as the Wright Brothers did. This portion of the book is based on the true story of a Chinese immigrant that on September 22, 1909 flew from the hills of Oakland, California. As Yep points out in his author’s note, this book is a historical fantasy and not an actual factual construction. Nonetheless, Windrider’s quest is such that you feel just as caught up in the excitement of the moment as he is when at last he is able to test his creation.

What is so impressive about Lawrence Yep’s writing is how he accepts that there are no hard and fast rules about the ways in which people act and react.

Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life

Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life: The New Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Hardcover – 2005
Author: Visit ‘s Steven C. Hayes Page ID: 1606710516

Self Help book on overcoming depression and resetting the mind.

HardcoverPublisher: Harbinger (2005)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1606710516ISBN-13: 978-1606710517 Product Dimensions: 11.1 x 8.1 x 1 inches Shipping Weight: 1.6 pounds Best Sellers Rank: #94,760 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #939 in Books > Medical Books > Psychology > General
Psychological treatments, like most forms of therapy, have been developing and adapting for centuries. In recent years the best treatment for depression, as well as a host of other psychiatric disorders, has being centered on a combination of medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The behavior therapies largely replaced psychoanalytic theory. The transition from psychoanalysis was not smooth, and as an attempt to ridicule psychoanalytic ideas, some notorious behavior therapists used to train people with mental illness to perform simple actions and then they would watch with amusement as psychoanalytically trained colleagues concocted creative but often bizarre symbolic interpretations of behaviors that had just been created.

We may now be on the cusp another revolution in therapy that could ultimately relegate CBT to the history books, rather in the way that CBT did to psychoanalysis. This new approach has sprung directly from the Buddhist traditions, and revolves around "mindfulness and acceptance". In the Buddhist worldview, each moment is complete by itself, and the world is perfect as it is; That being so, the focus is on acceptance, validation and tolerance, instead of change, and experience rather than experiment as the way to understand the world.

For many patients it feels profoundly liberating to be able to see that thoughts are just thoughts and that they are not "you" or "reality." This realization can free an individual from the distorted reality that they often create and allow for more clarity and a greater sense of control in life.
I suffer of OCD and panic attacks (if Hell exists, and I believe so, I am sure it has to be something like an eternal panic attack). My life had been, for many years -about 15-, all about my obsessions, compulsions and fears. I lived in a continuous reactive mode to my mind. If my mind was over-curious or stressed I felt fear and just followed it. I would be amazed at myself and my continuous, unstopping over-thinking.

I started by reading Tolle’s "The Power of Now". The book, instead of helping me, caused me panic attacks (well, the book and my personal circumstances too). I was feeling like "Well, my thougts are different from myself and my self-identity, but… if I am not my mind, if I am not my thoughts, then who am I?". Afterwards, I read "Brain Lock". Great book! Still, I was living in continuous reactive mode: if an obsessive thought would come, I would react with the book methodology (Realize one is having a thought, realize one has OCD, find something else to do and, finally, stop giving importance to the obsessions). The book was a breakthrough for me into CBT. But, walking down a library some day, prey of a depression after a panic attack had spoiled a relationship, I came across this book (Get out of our mind…) I bought it with a bunch of other books.

What makes this book so great is that it takes you by hand to ACT (a form of CBT) and actually has compassion at yourself. It goes slowly. It repeats the ideas several times and makes amazing analogies. It explains, in plain English, the mind-trap of trying not to think something and how this is a loophole (the less you try to think on an elephant, the more you think of it). It contains plenty of exercises. I did them (Do them!
