Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life

Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life: The New Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Hardcover – 2005
Author: Visit ‘s Steven C. Hayes Page ID: 1606710516

Self Help book on overcoming depression and resetting the mind.

HardcoverPublisher: Harbinger (2005)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1606710516ISBN-13: 978-1606710517 Product Dimensions: 11.1 x 8.1 x 1 inches Shipping Weight: 1.6 pounds Best Sellers Rank: #94,760 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #939 in Books > Medical Books > Psychology > General
Psychological treatments, like most forms of therapy, have been developing and adapting for centuries. In recent years the best treatment for depression, as well as a host of other psychiatric disorders, has being centered on a combination of medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The behavior therapies largely replaced psychoanalytic theory. The transition from psychoanalysis was not smooth, and as an attempt to ridicule psychoanalytic ideas, some notorious behavior therapists used to train people with mental illness to perform simple actions and then they would watch with amusement as psychoanalytically trained colleagues concocted creative but often bizarre symbolic interpretations of behaviors that had just been created.

We may now be on the cusp another revolution in therapy that could ultimately relegate CBT to the history books, rather in the way that CBT did to psychoanalysis. This new approach has sprung directly from the Buddhist traditions, and revolves around "mindfulness and acceptance". In the Buddhist worldview, each moment is complete by itself, and the world is perfect as it is; That being so, the focus is on acceptance, validation and tolerance, instead of change, and experience rather than experiment as the way to understand the world.

For many patients it feels profoundly liberating to be able to see that thoughts are just thoughts and that they are not "you" or "reality." This realization can free an individual from the distorted reality that they often create and allow for more clarity and a greater sense of control in life.
I suffer of OCD and panic attacks (if Hell exists, and I believe so, I am sure it has to be something like an eternal panic attack). My life had been, for many years -about 15-, all about my obsessions, compulsions and fears. I lived in a continuous reactive mode to my mind. If my mind was over-curious or stressed I felt fear and just followed it. I would be amazed at myself and my continuous, unstopping over-thinking.

I started by reading Tolle’s "The Power of Now". The book, instead of helping me, caused me panic attacks (well, the book and my personal circumstances too). I was feeling like "Well, my thougts are different from myself and my self-identity, but… if I am not my mind, if I am not my thoughts, then who am I?". Afterwards, I read "Brain Lock". Great book! Still, I was living in continuous reactive mode: if an obsessive thought would come, I would react with the book methodology (Realize one is having a thought, realize one has OCD, find something else to do and, finally, stop giving importance to the obsessions). The book was a breakthrough for me into CBT. But, walking down a library some day, prey of a depression after a panic attack had spoiled a relationship, I came across this book (Get out of our mind…) I bought it with a bunch of other books.

What makes this book so great is that it takes you by hand to ACT (a form of CBT) and actually has compassion at yourself. It goes slowly. It repeats the ideas several times and makes amazing analogies. It explains, in plain English, the mind-trap of trying not to think something and how this is a loophole (the less you try to think on an elephant, the more you think of it). It contains plenty of exercises. I did them (Do them!

My wife and I depart the first week in August for a Baltic Sea cruise aboard the Silver Whisper. Just found this new hard-cover book at B&N today. It has beautiful photos and information on many of the places we will be visiting. Not only are we enjoying it now and allowing to help our trip planning, but I can see it will be a book we will treasure for many years to come.

Since it focusses on a couple of places extensively, with handy, informative city walks and lots of info about eating, sleeping and transportation, but skips entire parts of the Scandinavic countries, this guide is very good, and perhaps even more useful than the Lonely Planet, if you only visit those places described in the book and not the rest. Not all major destinations are listed, e.g. Trondheim and Göteborg are missing, hence my 4 out of 5 stars, but even with those cities missing I though it a very useful book. The city walks are excellent and somehow we often ended up in restaurants that were listed.
I bought the ebook version which was very convenient on both phone and tablet, the only disadvantage being that you have to browse quite a bit between the city walk maps and the (very informative) written description.
Places described in this guide book:
– Copenhagen
– Near Copenhagen (Roskilde and a few other sights)
– Central Denmark (àrø, àrøskøbing, Odense)
– Jutland (Aarhus, Legoland, Jelling, Himmelbjerget, Silkeborg (but oddly enough no mention is made of the main sight of the town, the Silkeborg Museum with the naturally mummified corpse of the Tollund man), Ribe)
– Oslo
– A tour suggestion via Flåm, Aurland and the Undredal
– Sognefjord
– Gudbrandsdal Valley and Jotunheimen Mountains
– Bergen
– South Norway (Stavanger, Setesdal, Hovden, Kristiansand)
– Stockholm
– Near Stockholm (Sigtuna, Uppsala)
– Stockholm’s Archipelago
– Southeast Sweden (Växjö, Glass Country, Kalmar, àland)
– Helsinki
– Tallinn

The Rick Steves books are always great for trip planning and for tips on getting around once you get to your destination. We used them exclusively for our Italy/Switzerland trip this year and were never led astray. You can count on the books to represent transportation, lodging, and tourist sites accurately and give you tips for everything. We swear by these books. We are only in the planning stages of our Scandinavian trip, so we can’t attest to the on-the-ground aspect of this book yet, but I’m sure the information will be as spot on as in his other books.

No god but God : The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam Kindle Edition

No god but God (Updated Edition): The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam Kindle Edition
Author: Visit ‘s Reza Aslan Page ID: B004SOQ0U8

File Size: 2047 KBPrint Length: 384 pagesPublisher: Random House; Updated edition (August 30, 2011)Publication Date: August 30, 2011 Sold by: Random House LLC Language: EnglishID: B004SOQ0U8Text-to-Speech: Enabled X-Ray: Enabled Word Wise: Not EnabledLending: Not Enabled Enhanced Typesetting: Not Enabled Best Sellers Rank: #30,479 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store) #6 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > History > Religion > Islam #12 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Religion & Spirituality > Religious Studies & Reference > History #15 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Religion & Spirituality > Islam
Iranian born Dr. Reza Aslan was seven years old when his family fled the Iranian revolution and arrived in America. He would grow up a Persian Muslim in a relatively open America. Here he would earn a Master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School and his doctorate in the Sociology of Religion from the University of California, Santa Barbara. In other words Dr. Asan grew up in a world where he was very separate and distinct from his surroundings and reacted to the situation by seriously studying the history and meanings behind these distinctions.

In his book No God but God the reader is given the benefit of this thoughtful man’s years of study. The majority of this book is a readable and systematic description of the theology and history of the Muslim religion. One of my favorite old Bible stories is that of the "Still Small Voice". The lesson from this story is to ignore the storms and bombast the world can give us and listened to the quiet internal logic of real inspiration. Dr. Aslan would never claim to be the still voice of God, but the tone of his book is that of a calm, confident, and knowledgeable instructor.

In reading the biography of Mohammed we meet a man whose divine inspiration may be a matter of debate in the West; but who lived a life remarkable for his ability to succeed in building one of the world’s great religions. Along the way he would negotiate alliances and conduct warfare with and without the advantages that would normally guarantee diplomatic or military victory. The collections of his sayings that would be later assembled into the Koran appear to reflect the co-mixture of the words needed to inspire an Army, promote cooperation from allies and to inspire fear in enemies.
This book is a fascinating read. Starting with the pre-Islamic Arabia, it traces the evolution of Islam all the way to the recent popular pro-democracy uprisings in the middle east – the updated edition that is. Along the way, it marries history with erudite commentary, answers a few dogmatic points of views, & raises, rather honestly, quite a few questions.

Quite a good many of the chapters dwell on the rise of Islam in the desert of the Arabian peninsula, the life of Muhammad & its strife, the power struggles after Muhammad’s death, the expansion of Islam to far away corners beyond its humble Arab origins, & the consolidation of the ways & practices into codified religion. It further does a great job of articulating both the evolution & description, if not definition, of the various sects – namely the Sunni, the Shia, & the Sufi.

The tales continue into the modern nineteenth, twentieth & twenty first centuries – the story of Iran is a gripping one – & the book continues its journey into the many ideological branches that evolved in this period – the politics of Islam at battle with colonialism & a fast modernizing world, & the divergent pulls of reformist agendas against fundamentalist ones. Finally, the author speculates a little on the future of Islam, its diaspora in the western world with deep connections to each other & the larger community using the internet.

For me, the chapters on what defines a Muslim, to the extent possible, & the related symbolism of such practices was an eye-opener.

About the Author

Mitch Albom is an author, playwright, and screenwriter who has written seven books, including the international bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie, the bestselling memoir of all time. His first novel, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, was an instant number-one New York Times bestseller that has since sold more than six million copies worldwide. For One More Day, his second novel, was also a #1 New York Times bestseller. Both books were made into acclaimed TV films. Mitch also works as a columnist and a broadcaster, and serves on numerous charitable boards. He lives with his wife, Janine, in Michigan.

Hardcover: 240 pagesPublisher: Hachette Books; 1st edition (September 4, 2012)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1401322786ISBN-13: 978-1401322786 Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 0.9 x 7.6 inches Shipping Weight: 8 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #11,240 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #5 in Books > Literature & Fiction > Genre Fiction > Religious & Inspirational > Science Fiction & Fantasy #11 in Books > Christian Books & Bibles > Literature & Fiction > Fantasy #16 in Books > Christian Books & Bibles > Literature & Fiction > Classics & Allegories
The Time Keeper, by Mitch Albom, follows the creator of time. Dor, the main character, is Father Time; he is the Time Keeper, cursed to hear every one of man’s cries for time. Published by Hyperion, ISBN: 9781401322786, the book should appeal to anyone who have ever said "I just don’t have the time."

As a young man, Dor is the first human to develop a system of counting and measuring time. His discovery leads him to forsake everyone in his life, except one person who is immune to his obsession. This one person, Alli, is the only one who holds the key to access Dor’s attention; the only one whose presence has the ability to make Dor forget about his discovery. Dor’s motivations are made clear by the author. His environment and his discovery play against each other in a well-developed tension which, in turn, plays into the development of the entire narrative.

Mitch Albom provides enough detail at crucial points in the story to inform the reader of the driving themes of two other supporting characters, Sarah and Victor, who are plagued with being bound by time. Their personal struggles and their lives are driven by their blind constraint. Along with Dor, they are all prisoners of the same device. Only when the protagonist frees Dor, does Dor begin to understand the sentence and the meaning of the very thing he invented. He is a slave, perhaps in Plato’s Cave, where he is only exposed to the shadows of thoughts and reality from outside the cave.

He eventually becomes the master of the thing that once held him. He holds the hourglass, where he was once imprisoned and which now maintains control. Before he can guide the others through their obsessions, he is without direction as he discerns the meaning of his hourglass.
The measurement of time, Mitch Albom’s parable tells us, distinguishes man from other animals. Man alone measures time, and man alone fears time running out. Every parable has a moral, and Albom’s is this: we should replace fear of losing time with an appreciation of the time we have. It is a worthy lesson, even if the parable flounders as it makes its way there.

The Time Keeper imagines Father Time as a real person. In biblical times, Father Time’s name was Dor. While his childhood friend Nim was building the Tower of Babel, Dor was learning how to measure time. When Dor’s wife becomes ill, Dor tries to climb the tower in the hope that by reaching the heavens, he can make time stop. When the tower falls, Dor is banished to a cave and cursed with immortality because he offended God. By teaching man to count time, "the wonder of the world he has been given is lost."

Alternating with Dor’s story are those of two other characters. Victor Delamonte, the fourteenth-richest man in the world, has a tumor on his liver. At the age of 86, he is running out of time. He resolves to buy more time. Sarah Lemon is a smart but unattractive seventeen-year-old who falls in love with an insensitive hunk named Ethan. When he rejects her, she doesn’t know if she wants to keep living — she wants less time than she has been allotted. Dor’s penance — his chance to atone for the sin of inventing clocks — requires him to intervene in the lives of Victor and Sarah.

The Time Keeper is easily read in one or two sittings (depending upon how long you sit). Albom uses simple sentences to tell a simple story. As is generally true of parables, simplicity is The Time Keeper’s defining characteristic.
" The Time Keeper" by Mitch Albom. Release date: Sept. 4, Hyperion Publishing
"Where did the time go?" "Time flies." "I ran out of time." "It’s like time stood still." They’re just a few examples of the time-related phrases that we all use, words that imply is something that we can’t control.
But, what if you could, would you want what comes with the responsibility?
Time – whether it’s too or too little – and how it’s handled by fallible humans is the subject of best-selling author Mitch Albom’s latest , "The Time Keeper." Just as with his other hits – "Tuesdays with Morrie," "Have a Little Faith," "One More Day" and "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," his novel is a thought provoker, urging readers to find the depth in his simple, yet imaginative writings. He has once again taken a simple theme and created an inspirational tale that lingers in the mind long after the last page is read.

Time is first noticed 600,000 years by Dor, an ordinary man with an extraordinary need to count, measure and bring order to his days. He is the first man on earth to count hours, literally becoming Father Time. Rather than embracing time as a gift from God, Dor challenges Him when his wife dies.
Dor is banished to a cave when voices rise up from a pool as they ask, plead and demand more time. Centuries have passed, and Dor doesn’t have the spiritual strength to take much more. God agrees to free him if he can help two people, a teenage girl named Sarah and an elderly man, Victor, embrace the true meaning of time. Armed with a magical hourglass, Dor travels through time into today’s society, one dominated and dictated by time.
