While Supergirl: Last Daughter of Krypton is not the best of the New 52 titles released by DC as part of its epic relaunch, it is far from the worst. The Supergirl origins story told here is, in some ways, more similar to prior incarnations of its title character than many of the other origins stories in the New 52. Supergirl’s meteor ends up crashing through the earth and landing in Siberia instead of Kansas. When Kara climbs out of the rubble of her ship she is already an adult rather than a small child as her more famous cousin was upon arrival.
The story gives us a very alien Supergirl. She struggles to make sense of her new surroundings, speaks and thinks in Kryptonian and is unable to accept the news that her home planet, Krypton is no more. Unlike Superman’s story, which is in many ways about an alien learning to thrive and be accepted in his new environment, Supergirl’s story is more about culture clash, loss and alienation. Whereas Kal-El is adopted by a kindly American family when his ship lands, Kara is immediately attacked by heavily armed soldiers. Her powers all manifest themselves instantaneously upon her arrival and she sometimes does not fully understand them. In one panel she is horrified by her own X-Ray vision.
While Supergirl herself emerges as an interesting and sympathetic character, I still found this book a bit uneven. The villains that Supergirl confronts once she learns the truth about Krypton are rather generic. I don’t want to give away any spoilers here, but for me the second part of the book was less successful and interesting than the first two or three chapters.
Mahmud Asrar’s pencilling more than gets the job done. The storytelling is excellent.
Prior to the DC’s line-wide relaunch in 2011, Supergirl was one of the many characters who suffered from convoluted continuity due to the fact that no less than 4 different versions of the character had existed since her inception in 1959, and although writers such as Sterling Gates have done some great work with Supergirl, more than anything else, she needed a fresh start.
SUPERGIRL VOL. 1: THE LAST DAUGHTER OF KRYPTON collects SUPERGIRL # 1-7 and is made up of two separate story arcs. The first begins with Kara Zol-El’s pod crashing in the Siberian wilderness. Confused and disoriented, she is immediately attacked by soldiers, though she has no idea what they want with her or even what they’re saying to her. The final three issues feature her struggle against the Worldkillers, four super-powered beings from her homeworld of Krypton. Of the two story arcs, the second is stronger and moves at a quicker pace, but the first does a solid job of laying the groundwork for the character while introducing a potential archnemisis.
Writers Mike Johnson and Michael Green clearly have a strong understanding of the character and write a Supergirl who is both strong and independent yet also searching for her place in the world. They are helped by the excellent art from Mahmud Asrar, whose style is slightly more-cartoony (a wise move considering the probable demographic) than many of the Image-influenced artists currently working at DC. Asrar’s storytelling is always clear and he is especially skilled at conveying emotion through facial expressions. It should also be noted that Kara is in no way sexualized which stands as a direct contrast to the treatment of other female heroes such as Starfire and Catwoman in the New 52.

Great collection of EVERY variant cover for the latest run of MARVEL STAR WARS books (STAR WARS 1-6, PRINCESS LEIA 1-5, and DARTH VADER 1-6)… love seeing the art as full page entries (and many as black and white variants as well)
Most of why I purchased this book was for the Alex Ross covers. Unfortunately about half of the covers he painted appear as 1 inch by 2 inch images in the bottom of a page. Yet a good portion of the other art has sketch or uncolored versions. There are several other places where they put in smaller pictures of some of the best art work. The book would have only needed to be 10 or 15 pages longer to see all of the art full sized. Why didn’t they do so? At almost $40 retail you would think that they would have at least considered doing so. I can only guess that they are planning on doing some sort of double dip later on where all of the ‘best’ art will show up at full size. Before I start, a couple of pieces of information that may help. First off, I find the science in this book to be a bit overwhelming at times, and I’ve been teaching at the university level for more than twenty years–just not in the sciences. I have a doctorate and three master’s degrees, and I still find my brain swimming when I try to make it through some of the scientific info. That’s just the way it is–the science isn’t for everyone, and you shouldn’t give up on this book if the science sections don’t make complete sense–just don’t read them. The information isn’t at all necessary for improving your running. It’s cool to know if you do make it through, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t.
Second, I used the DRF ten years ago (at age 44) to go from an 18:55 5k to an 18:05 in about six months. I just got back into competitive running last year (after several years of doing ultras), and I had no real speed at all. After three or four month, I found I wasn’t improving my times much, so I decided to give Daniels another go-round and bought the new edition. On November 1, 2014, I did a 6k in 24:52 (a 6:40 pace). Then I bought this book and started the 5k program, and in March of 2015 I did a 10k in 39:36 (a 6:23 pace). That pace, of course, would have been faster had I done just a 6k, so there is evidence in my experience that shows that this program works if you give it a chance.
Here’s what I’ve done, and what I recommend to others to whom I’ve given this book. First off, you need a current running time for a specific distance. If you don’t have one, go get one, either by signing up for a local 5k or going to a high school track and pushing yourself for a mile.
Being a recreational runner and mini-triathlon participant, I tried to read as many informative books on training as possible to improve my personal best times. I’ve read about Jack Daniels, PhD, and his successful distance running training programs in numerous online magazines before, so I didn’t hesitate to select this book instantly.
Likes:
*Specific training programs geared toward runners from novices to elite runners.
*Training based on scientific aerobic data, such as Velocity and VDOT O2 Max (maximum oxygen consumption and the efficiency of utilizing specific amounts of oxygen to generate velocity or speed/faster times), Maximum heart rate, Resting heart rate, etc..
*Simple wording and explanations allow most readers to readily understand the aerobic data and parameters being measured, calculated, and evaluated.
*Addressed the psychological and motivational aspects of distance running training.
*Informative tables of VDOT values for different levels and ages of runners, i.e., what VDOT ranges are expected to generate the times (at various distances) associated with age and level of proficiency.
*Very informative sections on breathing rhythm, altitude training, and preparing for events/races with precise time tables.
Slight drawback:
Very limited discussions on sports nutrition, supplements, carbo-loading, and energy drinks, etc.. Author just stated to have a consistent diet to store up necessary muscle glycogen for specific distances. Readers will have to rely on their own nutrition experiences or do further research on that important topic.
Overall:
An invaluable, informative, and proven distance running training guide based on scientific data and evaluations.

I am generally a fan of DK guidebooks, including some of the small-format "Top 10" guides, but I cannot recommend this guidebook without qualification. The book is appealing for its compact size and focus on the most significant sites in several categories. Like other DK books, the photographs are superior and provide the most compelling reason to buy the book. In general the book discusses the major sites the typical tourist will want to see (Tivoli, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Kongens Nytorv, Nyhavn, etc.) like many other books do, but due to its diminutive size detail is limited on any attraction. Normally that is fine for a book for use on the ground (rather than a larger book used for planning), but here the material is not especially well organized, and some of the ratings of restaurants and hotels are questionable: I do not consider "The Square" (Radhuspladsen) hotel to be a "Luxury Hotel", for instance.
While there will always be subjective disagreements about ratings, the impression I got while attempting to use this book over a week in Copenhagen recently was that the information was not well presented, and the "pull out map and guide" was actually worse than useless. The map I got at the train station was infinitely more useful than the horrible (and tiny) T-shaped pull out map in this guide: if you want to get really lost just try using it to navigate from the Radhuspladsen to Nyhavn, which is one of the most heavily traveled routes for tourists. Seriously, do yourself a favor if you buy this book and throw the map away.
The book is slickly packaged and might make a nice souvenir, but as a useful travel guide there are many better alternatives on the market.
As with the earlier review, the scattershot nature of the "top 10" format makes it inconvenient to find out about some places.
Much worse than that, however, is that the hours given for some museums are not right! We missed seeing a museum because the book told us it was open on Mondays, when in fact it was closed.
Also, the book mentions some attractions as being "near" other popular sites, but without enough information to find them (not even a north/south/east/west hint). "Near" sometimes turns out to mean 1 km away.
This book is probably better as a supplement to another guidebook, particularly because of the good maps of central Copenhagen, but it is not good enough on its own.
The "Top 10" format has its problems and they are much in evidence in this little guide to Copenhagen. Information about the same site is found scattershot through out the book instead of in one convenient spot. I found it pretty irritating. The maps, however, are very good, and best of all, a nice little compact separate map is to be found tucked into the flap of the back cover. The photos, as usual in this series, are helpful and vivid. On the whole, though, with the exception of the map, this is a better souvenir than it is a guidebook.

The Yoga Bible: The Definitive Guide to Yoga Postures by Christina Brown is a nice little yoga book that fits snuggly into your bag and can be a source of inspiration for all yoga students but some of the poses would challenge the most advance yogi’s.
Physically, this book has a small foot print but has over 400 pages of information and covers 170 Yoga Positions. The construction seems average at best. I doubt if this book would stand up to much wear and tear since the binding looks brittle. It is tough to keep open on the mat with out the pages closing quickly on you. It should be bigger!
The content of the books starts with Part One: Introductions (8 Yoga Limbs, Breathing, and Practice Suggestions), Part Two: The Practice (Postures, Pranayama, Mudras, Bandhas, and Kriyas), Part Three: Yoga with a Special Focus (Ailments, Meditation), Part Four: Finding Your Yoga (9 Branches of Yoga).
Part One: Introductions – Starts with the History of Yoga, Rewards, The Eight Limbs of Yoga, and Practice Guidelines. This section is clear, short, and concise. The guideline for practicing offers some very good suggestions for approaching your time on the mat.
Part Two: The Practice – The color photos are great and the detailed Information Box is extremely helpful with the following headings: Gaze, Build-Up Poses, Counter Poses, Lighten, and Effect. It would have been even better if they would have included Warnings and included page numbers next to the Build-Up and Counter Poses for quick reference. The models are exceptionally yogis with many years of practice so use some caution when trying these poses. It would have been an added benefit to show modifications with props.

I am a foreign citizen living in the US for about 4 years for graduate level degree in the US. Culture as well as language are the biggest obstacles of my life in the US. I overcame the basic survival and class language barrier after living 2-3 years, but the cultural barrier with combined with conversational language is very challenging. Not only for more socializing but also more nature English writing and speacking, I worked hard, and Culturacy Dictionary helps me a lot. It includes expressions from various areas, e.g. bible, literature, idiom, etc. During the reading or watching TV, I can understand better the implications and expressions rooted from relgion, history, literature, and other areas of culture.
I use this dictionary with several ways. First, just read the page I am intersted in. Second, I consult it during my writing to find better expression, and do more research to understand the background better via internet. Third, play game with this book with my American Classmates – in fact, this helps me the most. They explain what is not written in the dictionary, and this is the way I can acquire the knowledge of the expression easily and last long in my brain.
This dictionary is wonderful, I think, for both for navtive and non-native. Non natives can upgrade their English level with cultural understanding, and natives can be more sophisticated using their languages. It is a great tool, and I am happy to find it!
The pictures aren’t flashy. The text isn’t eloquent. But, this book delivers exactly what the subtitle suggests, "What Every American Needs to Know." Full of up-to-date and well-organized content, the book provides answers to everyday questions, in addition to being a source for research. (Writers of college papers will find this a very useful tool.)
Although I am not one to pick up a dictionary and read through it, I typically cover several pages at a time when I reference this book. While reading the text of one piece, I often find myself intrigued about, and looking up, another topic.
Every home should have a copy of this book!

Want to look up cultural references in Denis Miller’s rants? Can’t remember what the Byzantine empire did? Feel like your loosing your memory? This book can help!
Yes, I’ll admit the title does have a certain haughtiness and presumptiouness to it, but this book is packed with information. The topics covered are quite broad, and I guess it would HAVE to be if the goal is to ensure cultural literacy. Including all the things you should have learned in highschool had you been paying attention, this book is a great refresher course in everything from History, to Literature, to proverbs and idioms in the English language.
It has a bit of a western bias, which is sort of what I’m getting at when I say the title presumes alot. Perhaps an alternate title (and I mean this without cynicsm) would be "what most Americans don’t know about America but should." I include myself in that category, by the way.
The best thing about this book is it’s organization. At first, I was wishing it was all alphabetical, but then you realize that grouping entries in catagorized chapters is better. Additionally, the bites of data are concise and easily digested, enough to answer a question and provide enough information for you to look elsewhere if you want in depth explainations. Dea Donahue walks through people’s dreams by using the dreamers’ possessions and feeds off the energy. But she is never to interfere in the dream and never to make her presence known. Having such a unique gift has made it difficult for Dea to grow close to people, and it doesn’t help that her single mother ups and moves them at a moment’s notice. But in rural Indiana, she has made friends with awkward Gollum and enigmatic Connor, who recently moved to town from Chicago. He’s running from a tragic past and rumors circulate that he’s dangerous. When Dea starts entering Connor’s dreams, she risks calling attention to herself from the faceless monsters her mother has always warned her about. Dea walks dreams. She’s always been able to do it and more than a gift or a power, it has become an unwanted part of her life. It prevents her from being normal, along with the constant moving, a weird and secretive mother, a life where mirrors are prohibited and clocks are welcomed – she has always been an outsider, a freak and a loner. For a short time, she thinks that everything’s alright, with the entry of Connor, the new guy, who understands her and might even like her, but it doesn’t take a long time, for him to be exactly what shatters Dea’s carefully constructed life of dreams, lies, confusion and secrets.
Dreamland was a mess of a book. But it was also a beautiful and fascinating mess. I adored reading this book, where everything was all over the place, and the writing was whimsical and eerie. The story was intriguing, at times creepy, thrilling and unpredictable.
I liked Connor. The romance in this book, was subtle, though it did have importance to the plot. However, Connor was a great companion, a good friend and most of all, a stable and sensible guy who was the one thing that made sense in Dea’s life.
Dreamland is not just a story about Dea’s dream walking. Rather it’s a story of two quests. One involves the search for a person, and the other is a murder mystery. Dea’s life gets entangled with both of these quests, while her habit of dream walking drags her into trouble as much as it helps her.
One of the best things about the book is the writing. It was creepy as hell, and I loved it! The constant mention of the ticking of clocks, the birds that lead the way out of dreams and most of all, the faceless men – they gave me nightmares!
Dreamland was an interesting book, if I shall say. I really enjoyed this book. It had some light, cute moments and other moments the intensity of the book hit’s you in the face and you are left with such a emotional feeling and all you want to do is KEEP. READING. Overall, I really enjoyed this book but there were some things that bugged me.
Our main character, Dea, lives with her mom and they move around a lot. Not only that but her mom doesn’t have clocks or mirrors in their living space. Already you can tell there is definitely more to Dea’s mom than a crazy lady with weird motives. One thing that could have been improved with this book was Dea getting more character-personality-put into her. I finished this book and tried to come up with three words to describe her. I look back on those three words and kind of cringe because of how boring and common they were. (Words like happy! And kind!) I wish I could have put better words to describe her. I am expecting this book to have a sequel so I am hoping to learn more about her personality in the next book.
Even if I felt like Dea didn’t have much character, the character development she went through was great. In the beginning of the book, she is so clueless about her past and where she comes from. By the end of the book, she knows all this information about her roots is all revealed and that really changed her for the better.
Here is the part I enjoyed the most: the plot of this book. It all went at a really nice pace and not at all did I feel like it was being rushed. The dream-walking aspect of this book was also something I really enjoy about this book. Dreamland really gave a glimpse of the history and roots of dreamwalking and what it’s about it is the coolest thing.

I bought the 2009 Edition of this book and used it to self-study for the AP Psychology Exam. Studying from this book, and nothing else (for only a couple weeks leading up to the test), I was able to confidently take the exam and score a 5. This "Cracking The AP…" series of books are very good overall, but I noticed the Psychology one to be particularly well organized and concise. They give you all the information you need and none that you don’t. I can attest that this book is all you need to get a 5 on the AP test.
As a junior in high school, I took a one semester AP Psychology course in the fall which provided a mediocre understanding of the subject. With the amount I learned in class I would get a 2 or possibly a 3 on the AP Exam. I purchased this book a month before the exam and when I was finished with it, I felt like I was an expert at AP Psychology! All the terms I had learned with no meaning I now understood with depth! When it was time to take the actual exam, I felt as if it were only a Medium difficulty test (in comparison to other AP tests I’ve taken) and was confident I would receive a 4 or 5 on the exam. I ended up getting a 5 on the exam thanks to this book mainly! Nowadays I purchase AP Princeton Review books to just read the material and expand my knowledge on various subjects…way better than teachers could teach them.
Long story short, I highly recommend this book.
Score of Five on the AP exam means this book works! You go through the chapters (even only 60% of the entire book) one at a time and make some highlights and margin notes like I did and the book pretty much covers the test for a five. The practice exams included are extremely helpful as well. Will buy from this brand again for my AP Calculus test coming up!
